I made this jewelry organizer display from a board and furniture upholstery nails. It's super easy and cheap to make!

Simple and Easy DIY Jewelry Organizer

If you thought the Painted Serape Jewelry Organizer was a bit too involved, you’re going to love this jewelry organizer. It’s so simple to make! All you really need is a board and some furniture nails (for upholstery).  The rest of the supplies you will probably already have around the house – things like a hammer and ruler. Let’s get started and in about 2 hours or less you’ll have your jewelry nicely displayed and easily accessible, hanging on your wall.

Overview

Time: 2 hours
Difficulty: Easy
Cost: $15

Supplies for Staining

This is one of the easiest projects I’ve posted so far and it doesn’t require a lot of supplies! This post contains some affiliate links to the specific products I used to make this jewelry holder.  When you click on and make a purchase through my link I will receive a small commission that helps to pay for this blog.  As always, I only refer you to products that I actually use and recommend.

If you’re going to stain your board like I did you’ll need…

Supplies for staining the simple diy jewelry organizer. It's so easy to do

  1. One wood board. Mine is 1/2″ thick x 5.5″ wide x 24″ long.
  2. Sandpaper 100 grit.
  3. Minwax stain in Honey color The little 1/2 pint is plenty for this project even though I had a quart.
  4. Cheap brush or rag for staining.
  5. Mineral spirits to clean the brush for reusing.
  6. Disposable pair of gloves to wear while staining.

How I stained the board:

  1. I bought my board for $1.00 out of a scrap bin at the local hardware store.  Then I cut it to 24″ long. If you don’t have a saw, just ask the hardware store to cut it for you. Most places will.
  2. To stain the board, first I sanded it down briefly to get rid of anything that may keep the stain from absorbing, and to give the board a nice even finish.
  3. Dust the sawdust off with a damp rag or tack cloth.
  4. Apply the stain with a brush, evening it out over the board.
  5. Then wipe off the excess with a rag.
  6. Wait for it to dry according to the instructions on the can, maybe 4 to 6 hours. I waited overnight before I continued the project.
  7. Optional step:  Seal the board in a clear coat to make it easier to dust and clean in the future.  Minwax Polycrylic is water-based and super easy to use for this step.

The color Honey by Minwax is hands down my favorite stain color by them.  It’s a beautiful warm tone of brown and has such a nice richness to it. Not too yellow and not too red.  It’s gorgeous!  Minwax makes lots of colors to choose from or you could even leave your board natural and skip the stain if you prefer.

Okay, now that we have our beautifully stained board we’ll start making it into a jewelry organizer.

Supplies for the Jewelry Organizer:

Supplies needed to make our own jewelry organizer

  1. Stained board.
  2. Decorative upholstery nails – 2 packs: 1 pack small daisy nails, 1 pack larger dome nails. I can always find these at any major craft store, like Hobby Lobby or JoAnn Crafts.  Or if you prefer to buy online, these are the daisy nails, and these are the larger dome nails I purchased.
  3. Double sided foam tape for hanging on the wall.
  4. Ruler.
  5. Hammer to tap the nails in the wood.

Okay, let’s get to making this jewelry organizer!

To begin, line up your ruler on the top surface of the board wherever you want your top row of nails to be.  I started one inch from the side, then placed one daisy nail every 2 inches.  I used 12 daisy nails in total for the 24 inch long board. To start with I just pushed it in with my fingers.  Once I placed each one, then I went back and tapped it in further with the hammer.

Using the ruler to place the furniture nails.

For the bottom row of the larger dome head nails I lined the ruler up with the bottom edge of the board.  Starting at 2 inches from the side edge, I placed one dome nail every two inches. You’ll need 11 dome nails in total if your board is 24 inches long. Look it over and make any needed adjustments before you hammer them in.  Remember not to hammer them in too far because you’ll need the nails to stick out a bit so your jewelry can hang on them.

All that’s remaining is to hang your new jewelry holder on the wall!  Pretty easy, right?!

I used some double sided tape to hang this and it stuck just fine to my painted walls.  You can also screw it into the wall studs if you’re afraid of it falling onto kids or pets or yourself!

My idea in doing the two rows of nails was to hang earrings on the top row and necklaces and bracelets on the bottom row.

I’d love to see your version of this project if you make a jewelry organizer, especially if you finish it or paint it differently!

Here's the final product of the jewelry display / jewelry organizer. It was easy, cheap, and fast to make- the best kind of diy project. :)

Remember to pin this project for later if you’d like to remember it.
